In two talks I will attempt to describe four important mathematical ideas in Fields medalist Bao Chau Ngo's solution to the problem of the fundamental lemma. I will begin by explaining endoscopy and endoscopic groups and the orbital integrals associated with endoscopic pairs and their significance for trace formulas. Much of the first lecture will be devoted to just stating the fundamental lemma. Then I would like to state several of the important elements of large parts of the work. Among the ideas I would like to highlight are the use of Kostant's section to the conjugacy class morphism and the use of the Hitchin fibration.
