Abstract:

While tropical varieties are commonly described as combinatorial shadows of their algebraic counterparts, they also arise naturally in many other contexts due to their combinatorial nature. In this talk, we will introduce tropical varieties and showcase some of the applications of tropical geometry. Moreover, we will discuss how tropical varieties can be computed, and, in doing so, highlight some bread-and-butter techniques of classical computer algebra.
