Abstract:

The huge increase in available data and machine power increases in the demand for data scientists. This demand encourages many institutions to open Data Science (DS) programs. The teachers are coming from different disciplines and therefore have different research and teaching cultures. Thus, not only the field is young, its pedagogy is even younger.

In this talk, ten challenges of teaching DS will be presented. The 10 challenges will be presented according to four categories: a) The Discipline of DS, b) Psychology of DS, c) Professional skills of DS, and d) Learners and teachers of DS. The presentation of each challenge is accompanied with research questions that it sets. The focus is placed on the teaching of DS on the undergraduate level, mainly as a major study program. To illuminate our assertions, data from our research on the pedagogy of DS is presented.

The talk is based on Koby Mik’s PhD research, conducted under the supervision of the presenter.
