Around the third critical speed in Gross-Pitaevskii theory

A rotating Bose-Einstein condensate is usually described using the Gross-Pitaevskii theory. Of particular interest are the quantized vortices of the condensate, unveiling its superfluid nature. When increasing the rotation speed, three critical values are crossed at which the distribution of the vortices in the condensate change drastically.

In this talk we will focus on the third critical speed, marking the transition to a giant vortex state. We will provide a rigorous estimate of this speed in the Thomas-Fermi regime and describe the nature of the phase transition.
