Morse theory is the study of geometric objects by considering "nice" functions defined on them, instead of looking at the objects directly. This gives rise to some very concrete ways of describing complex geometric objects and for doing otherwise difficult calculations.

In the talk, I will sketch the basics of Morse theory and give examples of how to use it for calculations, like computing the Euler characteristic of a manifold. All the geometric objects will be surfaces, so the talk should be accessible to anyone that has taken or is currently taking geometry.
