Christian Hirsch, new associate professor of Data Science and Statistics

On 1 December 2021 Christian Hirsch starts as a new associate professor of Data Science and Statistics at the Department of Mathematics, Aarhus University. Christian is affiliated with the new Data Science study programme and his appointment is part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences' digitalization initiative.

Christian got his PhD from Ulm University in 2014. He is familiar with Denmark, having had a postdoc position at Aalborg University. He has also held postdoc positions at Weierstrass Institute in Berlin,
Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich as well as an assistant professorship in Mannheim. He comes to Aarhus from a position at the University of Groningen in the field of topological data analysis.

In his research Christian Hirsch has many partners and spans several fields in spatial stochastics, statistical mechanics, large deviations and topological data analysis. His work ranges from the theoretical aspects to the applied, such as in telecommunications. His present interests are within topological data analysis and analysis of networks. With the interest in topological data analysis, there will be contact points with the work of already existing research groups at the department, and in general, Christian's interests can contribute to the interdisciplinary DIGIT centre at Aarhus University.

In the video, Christian gives a short presentation of himself and his research interests.

Topological data analysis will also form part of Christian's teaching activities, as in the spring of 2023 he will hold a course in this subject. The course will be part of the course portfolio within the Data Science degree programme.
