Asger Hobolth and international colleagues characterizes mutational processes in cancer

Asger Hobolth and colleagues have characterized the mutational processes in more than 2500 cancer genomes. The findings are reported in a special edition of the journal Nature.

Asger Hobolth

In an interdisciplinary team effort with colleagues from Aarhus University Hospital and several other institutions, a catalogue of cancer mutations has been compiled. In particular, the few mutations that are believed to cause cancer are separated from the vast majority of neutral and harmless mutations. This classification allows for improved cancer treatment because the therapy can be tailored to the unique genome of each patient.

The team analysed whole genome-sequenced tumor samples from close to 2800 patients. The mutation patterns varies along the genome, with cancer type, and with the age of the patient.
