Abstract: The problem of producing "special" metrics on a given manifold has always been central in differential geometry. Unfortunately, metrics that can be regarded as special are usually determined by extremely difficult PDEs for tensors on a manifold, making extremely challenging even the task of producing examples. An approach to produce said examples - that has been very successful in the last thirty years, mostly in Complex Geometry - is the one of the so called "gluing constructions", consisting of the construction of special metrics on complicate objects by a gluing process of special metrics on simpler geometric objects. In this short talk I will briefly explain what a special metric is, describe the overall idea of gluing constructions and sketch a work for immersed surfaces by N. Kapouleas to give a concrete (and visualizable) example. Everything while avoiding technicalities.
