Étale cohomology provides a powerful analogue of singular cohomology in algebraic settings. In this talk, I will begin by reviewing the classical comparison theorems between singular and de Rham cohomology, and the étale comparison theorems for algebraic varieties. I will then discuss recent advances in comparison theorems for étale cohomology of rigid analytic varieties.
