Inaugural lecture

Solving the Einstein equations directly is a hard problem. Using symmetry gives access to a number of concrete ways to find solutions. I will focus on symmetries related to circle actions, indicating how these may used to build geometric structures that solve the Einstein equations, and look towards new methods these suggest.
