DFF grant for project on harmonic analysis beyond Lie groups
Associate Professor Corina-Gabriela Ciobotaru from the Department of Mathematics, Aarhus University, has received a grant from the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) for the project "Beyond Unitary Representations of Locally Compact Groups".
The project investigates a central hypothesis: Are Lie groups uniquely endowed with ‘beautiful’ harmonic analytic properties among all locally compact groups?
While many mathematicians suspect the answer is yes, existing tools in representation theory cannot yet confirm it. This project will introduce a new approach that builds on the geometry of non-Lie groups and extends beyond classical unitary representations. In doing so, it aims not only to illuminate the exceptional nature of Lie groups but also to reveal new classes of representations for non-Lie groups.
The three-year project will also include the appointment of a postdoctoral fellow.
