The unreasonable effectiveness of physics in the pursuit of mathematics is spoken of frequently these days. One particular instance is string theory. By studying the boundary conditions for open strings, we can gain insight into the geometry of algebraic varieties. These boundary conditions form a category which is a very robust invariant of the variety. In this talk, I'll discuss how the structure of this category constrains, conjecturally and provably, the structure of the variety, with a particular focus over non-algebraically closed fields.
