We develop the spectral decomposition of a Rankin--Selberg period involving a Schwartz function and the square of a maximal degenerate Eisenstein series. We obtain a partial reciprocity formula for the second moment of the GL(n) times GL(n) L-functions and use that to obtain an asymptotic expansion of the moment in a conductor aspect family.
