Recently, two families of aperiodic monotiles (the Hat and the Spectre) were discovered by an amateur mathematician David Smith, and these tilings solve (in a certain sense) a problem posed by Ludwig Danzer. In this talk, we give an overview of the story and present a way to learn a bit more about the symmetries and the long-range order of these tilings, using the mathematical diffraction theory.
